The Miami Marlins – routinely overshadowed and ignored in the local sports scene – took center stage as opening day came to South Florida.
Muhammad Ali made a surprise visit, the blind guitarist Jose Feliciano sang the national anthem and Commissioner Bud Selig was in the crowd as the Marlins’ owner, Jeffery Loria, unveiled his $515 million Marlins Park to much anticipation and fanfare.
The colorful ballpark with the retractable roof and the picturesque view from left field of Miami’s skyline was a hit with a near-capacity crowd of 36,601. But Loria’s off-season spending binge might take a little longer to catch on.
