Paris climate deal meeting still on as Republican leaders register opposition
The point person behind Barack Obama’s environmental agenda has declared Americans are fed up with climate change denial and other efforts to wreck a Paris summit to stop global warming.
Despite Friday’s horrific attacks, Obama and other world leaders still plan to travel to Paris on 30 November for the start of two weeks of talks aimed at securing a global agreement to reduce climate pollution.
Republicans in Congress could vote as early as Tuesday to repeal the main pillar of Obama’s climate plan – which would send the message to Paris that the president faces strong opposition to his agenda.
Minneapolis mayor calls for DoJ inquiry into police shooting of black man
The mayor of Minneapolis has asked the Department of Justice to open a civil rights investigation into the police shooting of Jamar Clark, a young black man whose potentially fatal injuries have led to protests.
Mayor Betsy Hodges made the request following a day of demonstrations by activists who say that Clark, 24, was unarmed and in handcuffs when a police officer shot him in the head. Protesters made a series of demands including an independent federal inquiry.
Power cut on international space station can’t be repaired until 2016
The International Space Station has had a power cut and spacewalking repairs may be needed once a replacement part can be delivered by rocket.
Nasa said on Monday that the six astronauts were left with one less power channel on Friday. A short circuit in equipment on the station’s framework was to blame. The short apparently tripped a current-switching device, resulting in the loss of one of eight channels used to power the orbiting lab. The affected systems were switched to alternate lines.
California gripped by wintry weather as storm brings high winds and blizzards
A wintry blast of air brought blizzard-like conditions on Monday to parts of the west after whipping up a damaging tornado in central California and buffeting the Los Angeles area with gusts topping 70mph, forecasters said.
Drivers in southern California mountain areas were urged to use caution as light snow and hail fell at elevations as low as 4,000 feet. Powerful winds knocked down branches and caused scattered power outages.
Blowing snow and ice also slowed traffic on mountain highways in northern Arizona and New Mexico as the weather system moved east.
As much as 18 inches of snow was possible when Colorado gets hit later on Monday, the weather service said. The worst conditions were expected early on Tuesday in areas south and east of Denver and on the eastern plains.
