Anti-Abortion Rep. Wanted To Abort His Baby
Christianna Silva, Newsweek

Republican Representative Tim Murphy of Pennsylvania is lying to both his wife and the American people. He sent a text message to his mistress and asked her to get an abortion, after pushing for anti-abortion legislation, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

“And you have zero issue posting your pro-life stance all over the place when you had no issue asking me to abort our unborn child just last week when we thought that was one of the options,”

Shannon Edwards, Murphy’s extramarital girlfriend and a forensic psychologist in Pittsburgh wrote him on January 25, according to a series of documents obtained by the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. The text messages showed Murphy’s cell phone number, the newspaper reported.

Murphy responded by telling Edwards that it’s okay to be pro-life at work since he doesn’t really mean it.

“I get what you say about my March for life messages,” he texted to Edwards. “I’ve never written them. Staff does them. I read them and winced. I told staff don’t write anymore. I will.”

He’s supposed to be one of the many anti-abortion congressmen. In fact, after news of his extramarital affair broke out in September, he was still endorsed by LifePAC and the Family Research Council. Furthermore, he’s a member of the House Pro-Life Caucus and is currently co-sponsoring the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act, which would ban abortion after 20 weeks except in cases of rape, incest or where the pregnancy poses a threat to the life or physical health of the mother. …

Congressman Caught In Abortion Hypocrisy To Resign
Paige Lavender, Huffington Post

Rep. Tim Murphy (R-Pa.) plans to resign from Congress following the revelation this week that he’d urged a woman he was having an affair with to have an abortion.

The office of House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) on Thursday announced Murphy’s resignation, which will go into effect Oct. 21.

“It was Dr. Murphy’s decision to move on to the next chapter of his life, and I support it,” Ryan said in a statement. “We thank him for his many years of tireless work on mental health issues here in Congress and his service to the country as a naval reserve officer.”

Murphy had initially said he would retire at the end of his term and take “personal time” in the coming weeks to “seek healing.”

The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported Tuesday that a woman who’d had an affair with Murphy called him out for his publicly pro-life views in a text message after he asked her to have an abortion during an “unfounded pregnancy scare.” …

New Bill Would Limit Abortion To Cases Where Procedure Necessary To Save Promising Political Career
The Onion

WASHINGTON—Saying the measure would radically curtail access to the procedure except under the most urgent conditions, House Republicans on Wednesday introduced legislation that would sharply limit abortions to those necessary to save a promising political career.

“This bill amends the federal criminal code to redesignate abortion as illegal except in extraordinarily rare cases where a politician’s future as an elected representative is in jeopardy,” read a joint statement from the House GOP, explaining that unless there was no other way to ensure that a young legislator could continue rising through the ranks in D.C., the bill would bar women unconditionally from terminating a pregnancy.

“Abortion is a sin, but we recognize that there may be no other alternative when fulfilling lifelong political ambitions is at risk. That is why this bill is so important to pass into law.”

At press time, the bill was amended to clarify that the political careers in question were men’s and that any pregnant female politicians would be required to bring pregnancies to full-term.

I was thinking of putting these articles up as one of my Odds & Onions Challenges, but it’s just too typical.

I must say, the last line of the Onion article truly channels what Republicans really want.
