The Breakfast Club: 4-1-2014

(10 am. – promoted by ek hornbeck)

Welcome to The Breakfast Club! We’re a disorganized group of rebel lefties who hang out and chat if and when we’re not too hungover  we’ve been bailed out we’re not too exhausted from last night’s (CENSORED) the caffeine kicks in. Join us every weekday morning at 9am (ET) and weekend morning at 10:30am (ET) to talk about current news and our boring lives and to make fun of LaEscapee! If we are ever running late, it’s PhilJD’s fault.

The UK Is Stripping ‘Terrorist Suspects’ of Citizenship — It’s a Dangerous Precedent for the Rest of the World

Hashi was stripped of his citizenship by the United Kingdom in the summer of 2012 because, the government says, his continued status as a citizen is “not conducive to the public good.” That’s official British code for being a suspected terrorist. The UK has stripped the citizenship of at least 16 others on national security grounds. There are no judicial hearings and they are given no opportunity to defend themselves. The British government is now trying to expand its power in order to legally make a person stateless.

Most of those left without citizenship in Britain are Muslims. Critics of the policy say it’s one more pernicious example of how Britain, like the U.S., has exploited the war on terror to target Muslim communities.

NSA Blows Its Own Top Secret Program in Order to Propagandize

The NSA engages in this fear-mongering not only publicly but also privately. As part of its efforts to persuade news organizations not to publish newsworthy stories from Snowden materials, its representatives constantly say the same thing: If you publish what we’re doing, it will endanger lives, including NSA personnel, by making people angry about what we’re doing in their countries and want to attack us.

But whenever it suits the agency to do so-meaning when it wants to propagandize on its own behalf-the NSA casually discloses even its most top secret activities in the very countries where such retaliation is most likely. Anonymous ex-officials boasted to the Washington Post last July in detail about the role the agency plays in helping kill people by drones. The Post dutifully headlined its story: “NSA Growth Fueled by Need to Target Terrorists.”

Climate Signals, Growing Louder

Perhaps now the deniers will cease their attacks on the science of climate change, and the American public will, at last, fully accept that global warming is a danger now and an even graver threat to future generations.

(snip)

The report’s conclusions mirrored those of a much shorter but no less disturbing report issued two weeks ago by the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the world’s largest scientific society. Like the panel, the association declared that the world is already feeling the effects of global warming, that the ultimate consequences could be catastrophic, and that the window for effective action is swiftly closing.

Obama administration urges Supreme Court to dismiss First Amendment suit brought by anti-Bush demonstrators

Such efforts to arrest and sequester anti-Bush demonstrators were a regular tactic of the Bush administration, which arrested workers, students and several grandmothers for carrying signs outside of so-called “free speech zones.”

These moves-including the one at issue before the court-were made in blatant violation of the decades-old First Amendment legal concept of “viewpoint discrimination,” which prevents the government from treating individuals differently on the basis of their political viewpoint.

The Obama administration, however, is arguing that the decision to quarantine the anti-Bush protesters was necessary as a measure of “national security,” implying that peaceful anti-Bush demonstrators might have hurled a bomb or otherwise threatened the president’s life.

Something to Think about over Coffee Prozac

Dictatorship naturally arises out of democracy, and the most aggravated form of tyranny and slavery out of the most extreme liberty.
