Tonightly we say good bye to 2015, at least as far as The Daily Show and The Nightly Show are concerned. Stephen and Jon’s departures were unexpected before election year and came as something of a shock. I’ll say quite frankly I miss Stephen (even though he’s on Late Night now and I can still see him) more than Jon because Jon was always a bit of a squish and simply wasn’t as funny.
Both of them left to hypocritical hagiographic praise from the deeply corrupt and criminal political class and their complicit corporate Media cronies who neither watched nor understood them.
While I miss them, they weren’t all that.
Their replacements, Larry Wilmore and Trevor Noah, are not as good- yet.
We have more experience with Larry. He stumbled for a format for months and finally settled into something that I think works, basically The Daily Show with a panel instead of a guest. His monologues have gotten much, much better, funnier and more on point. If you long for the golden age of Jon Stewart, Larry is your guy. I’ve always in this series of posts been supportive of him and will continue to be despite the fact that covering it means I miss the best part of the Colbert show. I hope he moves from strength to strength and never forgets a certain serial rapist in the coming year.
Trevor is still searching for his sea legs. He’s handicapped of course because he’s South African and doesn’t viscerally understand United States politics. The most damning thing I can say about him is he’s not even as good an interviewer as Jon was and that’s saying a lot because Jon was terrible, I mean really, just awful. His monologues are uneven but the correspondents’ set pieces are as sharp as they ever were despite almost all of them being rookies and the writing staff is virtually the same and hasn’t lost a beat. I think that in 2016 we can expect Trevor to get more confident and secure (and perhaps he’ll learn to interview and ditch those stupid musical guests that don’t work at all in a half hour format).
I hate change (if I haven’t mentioned that before) but I think we have to give Mr. Continuity and The New Guy a chance.
Mr. Mainstream gets his tomorrow.

Never been crazy about best of shows. Seems lazy and self indulgent.

Hey, Stephen’s old fireplace.
They brought back Stephen’s yule log.
Prairie Home Companion did a bit a week or two ago about Trump. Donald was trying to get out of a bet with Bubba that if he ran he could win the Republican nomination. He bet against himself thinking he could take the Clinton ‘ s for an easy couple million. Now he’s afraid he’ll win the whole thing.
Found it! Didn’t expect I would. There’s a pod cast and everything.
