Grilled Baby Back Ribs

We think of ribs as an all-day affair, the meat cooked in smoke and low heat until it begins to pull from the bone. But baby backs are quicker and can be grilled as well, and the result is delicious.

Skewered Chicken With Peanut Sauce

That peanut butter is relegated to the sandwich while sesame butter (tahini) is seen as an exotic food item is one of the wonderfully preposterous anomalies of American cooking. In the rest of the world, especially Asia, peanuts are special, used not only as a garnish but as a main ingredient in sauces.

Perfect Soy-Grilled Steak

This marinade of soy sauce, ginger, garlic, honey and lime is ideal for steak, but it works beautifully with any tender meats like burgers, boneless chicken, tuna and swordfish, all of which can be turned in the sauce before putting them on the grill. Longer-cooking meats, like bone-in chicken, should be cooked within 10 minutes of doneness before basting with the sauce.

Almond Cake

This moist and fragrant cake from Molly Wizenberg, the author of the popular food blog Orangette, calls for a whole orange and lemon, almonds and olive oil.

Watermelon-Strawberry Slush

Here, watermelon and strawberries are blended with a little sugar, lemon juice and a healthy glug of rum or vodka. Leave the spirits out if you’re serving teetotalers or children. Paper umbrella optional.
