Broncos’ Brandon Marshall dropped by sponsor after kneeling during anthem
Martin Pengelly, The Guardian
The Denver Broncos linebacker Brandon Marshall has lost an endorsement from a sponsor after following Colin Kaepernick, the San Francisco 49ers quarterback, in refusing to stand for the national anthem before an NFL game.
Air Academy Federal Credit Union president and chief executive Glenn Strebe said the company respected “Brandon’s right of expression” but would no longer employ him as a spokesman.
…
After the game, he told reporters he had knelt because “I’m against social injustice. I’m not against the military, the police or America at all. I’m against social injustice.” …
High School Football Players Take Knee for Anthem Across Country
Common Dreams
High school football players across the US followed San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick’s lead and declined to stand for the national anthem Friday night and Saturday afternoon.
It appears that Kaepernick has started a movementwith his silent protest during the national anthem during a pre-season game on August 26. Kaepernick said his “taking a knee” was to protest racial oppression and police brutality in the United States.

Meanwhile, Alabama’s Birmingham News reports:The announcer of the Friday night football game at McKenzie High School in Alabama’s Butler County had something to say to those who may choose not to stand for the national anthem.
“If you don’t want to stand for the national anthem, you can line up over there by the fence and let our military personnel take a few shots at you since they’re taking shots for you,” the announcer said at the game versus Houston County High School, according to Facebook poster Denise Crowley-Whitfield. …
Former EPA head admits she was wrong to tell New Yorkers post-9/11 air was safe
Joanna Walters, The Guardian
Christine Todd Whitman, who as head of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) under George W Bush at the time of the 9/11 attacks told the public the air around Ground Zero in New York was safe to breathe, has admitted for the first time she was wrong.
…
Speaking to the Guardian for a report on the growing health crisis to be published on Sunday, the 15th anniversary of the attacks, Whitman made an unprecedented apology to those affected but denied she had ever lied about the air quality or known at the time it was dangerous.
…
On Friday, Whitman questioned the level of proof that the air made people sick, but said: “If this is a direct relation, we all screwed up.” She thought she was right at the time, she said, but added: “I can believe that the scientists may not have had all the information they needed.”Shortly after the attack on New York, Whitman said it was known that asbestos, lead and other toxins were in the wreckage of the Twin Towers, known as “the pile”, and that those working on rescue and recovery there should wear respirators. Most did not. …

Neighbors, town officials cry foul over ‘WTF’ sign on lawn
WOODBURY, Conn. (AP) — A Connecticut homeowner who planted on his lawn three large wooden letters that spell “WTF” is rankling neighbors and town officials who say the message is offensive.
WFSB-TV reports the phrase “Woodbury wastes taxpayer funds” is written on the letters along Main Street in historic Woodbury, a town of 10,000 residents. “WTF” also can stand for an obscene exclamation of disbelief.
This isn’t the first time homeowner Thomas Arras has fought with the town and the Woodbury Historical Commission over his handcrafted protest messages. A previous sign targeting First Selectman William Butterly Jr. read: “Butterly utterly utterly disappointing.”
Butterly isn’t affiliated with a political party. He says he’s outraged by the “WTF” sign but there’s not much the town can do about it without changing its rules.
A phone number listed for Arras rang unanswered Wednesday
