1 Japan passes 4 trillion yen disaster relief budget
by David Watkins, AFP
Mon May 2, 3:57 am ET
TOKYO (AFP) – Japan’s parliament on Monday passed an emergency 4 trillion yen ($49 billion) relief budget to help fund reconstruction after the deadly March 11 earthquake and tsunami devastated northeastern regions.
Ruling and opposition lawmakers put aside their differences in an effort to launch efforts to rebuild the country’s quake-hit northeast as quickly as possible. But analysts warned the passing of the budget will not ease pressure on under-fire Prime Minister Naoto Kan, who has faced criticism over the government’s handling of the crisis and the subsequent nuclear emergency. |

by W.G. Dunlop, AFP

TRIPOLI (AFP) – Demonstrators torched British and Italian diplomatic buildings in Tripoli on Sunday, after Libya accused NATO of trying to assassinate Moamer Kadhafi in an attack that killed one of his sons and three young grandchildren.
And the port in the besieged rebel-held city of Misrata was set ablaze in a deadly bombardment by forces loyal to the Libyan strongman, witnesses said. Libyan government spokesman Mussa Ibrahim told reporters in Tripoli that the house of Kadhafi’s second-youngest son, Seif al-Arab, “was attacked tonight with full power. |

The Internationale
Arise ye workers from your slumbers Arise ye prisoners of want For reason in revolt now thunders And at last ends the age of cant. Away with all your superstitions Servile masses arise, arise We’ll change henceforth the old tradition And spurn the dust to win the prize. So comrades, come rally No more deluded by reaction So comrades, come rally No saviour from on high delivers So comrades, come rally |

1 Kadhafi call for Libya talks rejected
by Afaf Geblawi, AFP
1 hr 56 mins ago
TRIPOLI (AFP) – Moamer Kadhafi vowed Saturday not to step down and proposed talks to end Libya’s conflict, a call rejected by rebels and by NATO, as his forces pressed an offensive against the key port of Misrata.
At the same time, a rebel spokesman said he feared loyalists were seeking to open a new front in the eastern desert to advance on Ajdabiya, a strategic road junction and gateway to the rebel stronghold of Benghazi. In an early-morning speech on state television, the Libyan leader said NATO “must abandon all hope of his departure. |

1 32 dead on Syria ‘rage day:’ activists, ministry
AFP
1 hr 36 mins ago
DAMASCUS (AFP) – At least 32 people were killed as tens of thousands of protesters rallied for a “day of rage” after Friday prayers, defying warnings of a harsh crackdown, Syrian activists and officials said.
Protests against President Bashar al-Assad’s regime were held in most major towns, witnesses said, in a repeat of pro-democracy rallies which have become the norm after weekly Muslim prayers. Security sources shot dead at least 16 people in the protest epicentre of Daraa, rights activists said. |

Wal-Mart: Our shoppers are ‘running out of money’
By Parija Kavilanz, senior writer, CNNMoney
April 28, 2011: 2:41 PM ET
“We’re seeing core consumers under a lot of pressure,” (Wal-Mart CEO) Duke said at an event in New York. “There’s no doubt that rising fuel prices are having an impact.”
…
Now, with its strategy of low prices all the time back in place, Duke said making Wal-Mart a “one-stop shopping stop” is a critical response to dealing with the rising price of fuel.Americans don’t have the luxury of driving all over town to do their shopping.

NEW YORK (CNNMoney) — Wal-Mart said Thursday that it is bringing guns back to many of its U.S. stores in an effort to lift slumping sales.
…
Wal-Mart currently sells rifles, shotguns and ammunition in about 1,300 stores in the United States. Those firearms will now be available at about half of Wal-Mart’s 4,000 stores.
Tip of the hat to Chris in Paris who opines-
Is it asking for too much to have our political leadership implement policies that help the middle class as opposed to the continuing strategy that helps Wall Street?
