1 Dale Farm wins legal reprieve

By Robin Millard, AFP

Residents at the country’s largest illegal traveller camp won a last-minute court injunction on Monday delaying a bid by the local authority to evict them from the sprawling site.

The High Court ruling, stopping any action before a further hearing Friday, came as bailiffs prepared to enter the Dale Farm camp outside the town of Basildon.

A party atmosphere erupted among the 200 residents and outsider activists, some of whom have chained themselves to the hastily-erected barricades blocking the entrance to the 2.4 hectare camp.

1 Desperate US consumers turn to ‘extreme couponing’

By Fabienne Faur, AFP

2 hrs 9 mins ago

The humble coupon — which in the past gave consumers a few cents off soap or cereal — has mushroomed into a lifestyle for millions of Americans with its own television programs, websites and trading platforms.

A total of 167 billion coupons were distributed to US consumers in the first six months of 2011, according to the research firm NCH Marketing Services, and the value of redeemed coupons rose 5.3 percent to $2 billion.

But it’s not your grandmother’s Sunday newspaper coupon clipping anymore.

1 Libya fighters surge into two Kadhafi bastions

By Dominique Soguel, AFP

Fighters loyal to Libya’s new leaders on Friday thrust deep into the city of Sirte and into desert oasis Bani Walid, two of fugitive Moamer Kadhafi’s few remaining bastions, AFP reporters said.

On the political front, Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan was in Tripoli, boosting international support for the National Transitional Council (NTC) a day after Britain’s David Cameron and France’s Nicolas Sarkozy became the first foreign leaders to visit the new Libya.

Columns of NTC fighters backed by tanks launched the assault late morning on Sirte, Kadhafi’s hometown 360 kilometres (225 miles) west of Tripoli, after a first attack on Thursday was repulsed by loyalists, who set up sniper nests on rooftops.

1 Major central banks to provide dollars to banks: ECB

By Simon Morgan, AFP

Top central banks promised Thursday to lend dollars to banks who find themselves short of the US currency in the ongoing eurozone debt crisis, a move that boosted the euro and stock markets.

The move sent stocks soaring and gave a boost to the euro, just hours after the EU warned that the eurozone debt crisis was bringing growth to a standstill although the region will likely escape outright recession.

“The governing council of the European Central Bank (ECB) has decided, in coordination with the Federal Reserve, the Bank of England, the Bank of Japan and the Swiss National Bank, to conduct three US dollar liquidity-providing operations with a maturity of approximately three months covering the end of the year,” the ECB said in a statement.

By Yacine Le Forestier, AFP

The eurozone crisis could wreck the European Union, top EU officials warned on Wednesday as the leaders of Germany and France held talks with Greece to avoid a default and widespread chaos.

The pressure rose on all fronts with United States again expressing great concern, with Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner saying European states “now recognise they are going to have to do more” to resolve to the crisis.

Highlighting the threat to the global economy, Geithner is to exceptionally attend talks between European Union finance ministers and central bankers in Poland on Friday.

International alarm over euro zone crisis grows

by Noah Barkin and Stefano Bernabei

(Reuters) – International alarm over Europe’s debt crisis reached new heights on Tuesday, with U.S. President Barack Obama pressing the bloc’s big countries to show leadership as talk of a Greek default escalated and markets heaped pressure on Italy.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel sought to quash talk of an imminent Greek default or exit from the euro zone, but confusion over whether she would issue a joint statement on Greece with French President Sarkozy sent markets gyrating up and then down.

1 Kadhafi forces fight back, China recognises NTC

By Ines Bel Aiba, AFP

A defiant Moamer Kadhafi vowed to fight until victory as his forces launched surprise fightbacks on three fronts on Monday, and as Libya’s interim government won recognition from China.

The ferocious counterattacks on a Ras Lanuf oil refinery, near Kadhafi’s hometown of Sirte, and at Bani Walid near Tripoli came as a US official said Niger was ready to detain one of the elusive leader’s sons, Saadi, after he fled over the border.

“It is not possible to give Libya to the colonists again,” and “all that remains for us is the struggle until victory and the defeat of the coup,” Kadhafi said in a statement read out on Syria-based Arrai Oruba television.

1 Pentagon attacks inspired war of ‘vengeance’: US

By Dan De Luce, AFP

US military and political leaders on Sunday paid solemn tribute to the victims of the 9/11 attack on the Pentagon and to troops who have waged a war of “vengeance” in the decade since.

“Lives ended in this place. Dreams were shattered. Futures were instantly altered. Hopes were tragically dashed,” Admiral Mike Mullen, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said at a ceremony marking the day a hijacked airliner slammed into the Pentagon ten years ago.

Mullen, joined by Vice President Joe Biden and Defense Secretary Leon Panetta, said the attack inspired a new generation to join the armed forces as the country sought retribution against Al-Qaeda militants.

And how has ‘vengeance’ worked out for you?

1 Nude Blacks’ bare all for rugby fun

By Gael Favennec, AFP

Stripping a defence took on a whole new meaning as an enthusiastic crowd gathered to watch the ‘Nude Blacks’ here on Saturday ahead of the World Cup clash between Argentina and England.

The Nude Blacks, a side made up of amateur players from New Zealand, do, as their name suggests, play with no clothes on.

“Our first game was in 2002 in the middle of a dunes on a beach. We were frozen. It started as a joke as part of a backpackers’ festival,” Ralph Davies, founder of the Nude Blacks, told AFP on Saturday.
