In summary-

All the speculation about Mubarak resigning was wrong.  His defiant speech vowing to remain in power until September and assignment of unspecified powers to his crony, the torturer Suleiman, infuriated the crowd in Liberation Square.

They had already decided to march on the Presidential Palace when the torturer Suleiman got on the air and with not so veiled threats told people to go home and back to work.

Every one of the TV gas bags has no clue and they’re spouting constant bullshit.  Likewise all the wire services I normally use.

It will take much longer to search for non Egypt related news because I don’t trust any of the Egyptian stuff at this point and there is a ton of it, burying everything else.

Evening Edition will appear later, if at all.  As always this is an Open Thread.

1 IMF chief urges global monetary reform

by Veronica Smith, AFP

WASHINGTON (AFP) – IMF chief Dominique Strauss-Kahn on Thursday said the currencies of China and other emerging economies should play a greater role in global finance, as part of a bid to promote monetary stability.

Strauss-Kahn, the managing director of the 187-nation International Monetary Fund, backed the inclusion of the yuan in a basket of currencies that makes up the IMF’s Special Drawing Rights, a type of reserve currency.

Strauss-Kahn also advocated an expanded role for the SDR to help to bolster the monetary system in the face of damaging volatility.

1 Egypt regime warns of crackdown as revolt spreads

by Sara Hussein, AFP

1 hr 14 mins ago

CAIRO (AFP) – Egypt’s embattled regime warned of a military crackdown on Wednesday as massive protests demanding its overthrow spilled out across the country and deadly unrest flared in the remote south.

Hundreds of demonstrators marched on parliament from the epicentre of the uprising in Cairo’s Tahrir Square the day after the largest protests since the revolt began, as other demonstrations erupted in cities across the country.

Foreign Minister Ahmed Abul Gheit warned the army, until now a respected and mostly neutral force on Cairo’s streets, would intervene to protect the country if the protests against President Hosni Mubarak escalated.

1 Egypt protests draw biggest crowd yet

by Sara Hussein, AFP

1 hr 13 mins ago

CAIRO (AFP) – Hundreds of thousands of demonstrators flooded Cairo’s iconic Tahrir Square and towns across Egypt on Tuesday, in the biggest show of defiance towards President Hosni Mubarak since the revolt began.

In Cairo, the immense crowd hailed as a hero a charismatic cyberactivist and Google executive whose Facebook site helped kickstart the protests on January 25 and who was released after being detained and blindfolded for 12 days.

AFP journalists overlooking the square confirmed it was the biggest gathering yet in a movement which began last month. Witnesses in Egypt’s second city Alexandria said a march there also attracted record numbers.

1 Assange faces ‘denial of justice’: lawyer

by Danny Kemp, AFP

1 hr 52 mins ago

LONDON (AFP) – WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange would face a “flagrant denial of justice” if extradited to Sweden over allegations of rape and molestation, his lawyer told a court Monday.

The 39-year-old Australian could face the death penalty if further extradited to the United States on separate charges relating to WikiLeaks, his lawyer Geoffrey Robertson said at the start of a two-day extradition hearing in London.

Swedish prosecutors want to question the whistle-blowing website’s chief over allegations he raped one woman in Sweden and molested another, moves which Assange claims are politically motivated.

1 Protesters reject Egypt ruling party reshuffle

by Samer al-Atrush, AFP

1 hr 12 mins ago

CAIRO (AFP) – Senior members of Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak’s ruling party resigned on Saturday, but demonstrators staging a 12th day of anti-regime protests rejected the shuffle as a cosmetic measure.

The resignations came after Mubarak huddled with his new government for the first time on, and an official said that the country’s stock exchange would remain closed indefinitely as the stand-off continues.

State television said the executive committee of the ruling National Democratic Party had resigned en masse. Among those stepping down was Mubarak’s son Gamal, once viewed as his heir apparent, state television reported.

1 Mubarak stays put on ‘departure day’

by Ali Khalil, AFP

CAIRO (AFP) – President Hosni Mubarak defied a huge “departure day” protest to force his ouster Friday as US President Barack Obama said talks have began on a transition in Egypt and EU leaders said it was time for change.

“Some discussions” have begun on the details of a political transition in Egypt, Obama said, with details to be worked out by Egyptians themselves. He also warned that violence against demonstrators was unacceptable.

“We continue to be crystal clear that we oppose violence as a response to this crisis,” he said, as Egyptian authorities called for the protesters to go home but vowed not to use force.

1 Ruling party candidate out of Haiti race

by Clarens Renois, AFP

1 hr 6 mins ago

PORT-AU-PRINCE (AFP) – Haiti’s fraud-tainted ruling party candidate crashed out of the presidential race on Thursday, as the election commission bowed to weeks of US-led pressure and reversed earlier results.

Ending months of deadlock since disputed polls in November, the decision was met with calm on the streets of the quake-hit Caribbean nation, which has endured decades of political upheaval, dictatorship and bloodshed.

Announcing definitive first round results, the commission said popular singer Michel Martelly — and not the ruling party’s Jude Celestin — would face off against former first lady Mirlande Manigat in a run-off on March 20.

1 Bloody clashes rock Cairo as regime stands firm

by Samer al-Atrush, AFP

CAIRO (AFP) – Partisans of Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak stormed the Cairo stronghold of anti-regime protesters on Wednesday, sparking bloody clashes in which the government said three people were killed.

Washington, which has called for restraint since demonstrations broke out nine days ago, deplored the violence against “peaceful protesters” while UN chief Ban Ki-moon said the attacks on demonstrators were “unacceptable.”

The European Union added its voice to calls from US President Barack Obama for the transition from Mubarak’s three-decade-long rule to begin immediately after the veteran president announced late on Tuesday that he would not seek re-election in September.

1 Egypt’s Mubarak agrees to step down — but not yet

by Jailan Zayan, AFP

CAIRO (AFP) – Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak said on Tuesday he will not seek re-election in September but rejected demands that brought a million people on to the streets around the country that he quit immediately.

The veteran president’s announcement in a televised address drew angry jeers from demonstrators who again defied a curfew to spend the night in the capital Cairo’s Tahrir Square — epicentre of eight straight days of protests.

His insistence that he would remain at the helm to oversee the transition also fell far short of the demands of opposition groups that have set him a Friday deadline to quit to allow a clear break with his 30-year rule.

1 Egypt army backs people’s demands, holds fire

by Charles Onians, AFP

1 hr 1 min ago

CAIRO (AFP) – The all-powerful army came out in support of Egypt’s people on Monday and vowed not to fire on protesters, who are demanding President Hosni Mubarak’s ouster and have called a general strike.

In a political appeal, Egypt’s new Vice President Omar Suleiman went on television to offer an “immediate” dialogue with the opposition.

“President Hosni Mubarak has tasked me with opening immediate talks with the political forces to begin a dialogue around all the issues concerning constitutional and legislative reforms,” he said on state television.

So for Mubarak- Game over dude, game over.
