1 UK hacking scandal widens with Brown, royal claims

By Robin Millard, AFP

Britain’s phone hacking scandal spiralled Monday amid reports that former premier Gordon Brown and the royals were targeted, as the government dealt a blow to Rupert Murdoch’s bid for pay-TV giant BSkyB.

In a story taking new twists and turns by the hour and shaking the entire establishment, Brown was reportedly hacked by The Sunday Times and The Sun, both stablemates of Murdoch’s doomed News of the World tabloid.

The royal family were meanwhile allegedly targeted by the News of the World, Britain’s biggest selling weekly newspaper, which Murdoch shut down at the weekend amid allegations of widespread illegal phone hacking.

By Madeleine Coorey, AFP

Australia announced plans on Sunday to tax carbon pollution at Aus$23 (US$24.74) per tonne to help battle climate change, as it moved towards creating the region’s biggest emissions trading scheme.

Prime Minister Julia Gillard said there would be a fixed price on carbon pollution, blamed for global warming, from next year before an emissions trading scheme was introduced in 2015.

“We have had a long debate about climate change in this country,” Gillard said in a rare televised address to the nation.

Pakistan announced on Saturday its troops had taken back areas of Karachi occupied by armed groups and arrested more than 100 people after political violence across the vast port city claimed 95 lives.

Four days of unrest has been blamed on political and ethnic tensions, with gunmen firing on two buses in the early hours of Friday, killing 12 people including a six-year-old girl, according to security officials.

“Our paramilitary soldiers have secured the troubled localities and hills where armed terrorists were firing on innocent people, and have restored normal life,” interior minister Rehman Malik told reporters.

1 Atlantis blasts off on end-of-era spaceflight

By Kerry Sheridan, AFP

Atlantis blazed a path into history Friday as it rocketed off the launch pad for a final time, marking the last-ever liftoff of the 30-year-old American space shuttle program.

The storied spacecraft is carrying a crew of four US astronauts toward the International Space Station on a 12-day mission to re-stock the orbiting lab, where it is due to dock on Sunday.

The mission marks the end of an era in human spaceflight. The United States will soon have no spacecraft capable of taking astronauts to orbit, leaving Russia’s three-seat Soyuz capsule as the sole taxi to the ISS.

By Danny Kemp, AFP

Britain’s News of the World tabloid will print the last edition in its 168-year history on Sunday following a devastating scandal over phone hacking, owner Rupert Murdoch’s son James said Thursday.

The shock move comes after Britain’s biggest-selling Sunday newspaper was hit by allegations that it had hacked the phones of a murdered girl, the relatives of dead soldiers and hundreds of celebrities, politicians and royals.

“Having consulted senior colleagues, I have decided that we must take further decisive action with respect to the paper. This Sunday will be the last issue of the News of the World,” James Murdoch said in a statement.

1 British PM backs calls for phone hacking inquiry

By Alice Ritchie, AFP

Wed, Jul 6, 2011

British Prime Minister David Cameron backed calls for a public inquiry into phone hacking Wednesday after a tabloid targeted relatives of murdered children and possibly victims of the London bombings.

But he said police should first complete its probe of the “absolutely disgusting” allegations concerning the News of the World, the top-selling Sunday newspaper owned by Rupert Murdoch’s News International.

In his first statement on the affair, Murdoch condemned the claims as “deplorable and unacceptable” and said his company would “fully and proactively co-operate with the police”.

1 ‘News’ vows action over Dowler phone hack claims

By Alice Ritchie, AFP

1 hr 29 mins ago

Britain’s top-selling Sunday tabloid vowed on Tuesday to take the “strongest possible action” if it is proven that its journalists hacked the phone of a missing teenager who was later found murdered.

Prime Minister David Cameron earlier said police should pursue their investigation into the claims about the News of the World, owned by Rupert Murdoch’s News International, in “the most vigorous way”.

News International chief Rebekah Brooks, who was editor of the paper at the time of schoolgirl Milly Dowler’s disappearance in 2002, told staff that the allegations were “sickening” and “almost too horrific to believe”.

1 British PM’s Afghan trip marred by soldier death

By Danny Kemp, AFP

1 hr 13 mins ago

British Prime Minister David Cameron was forced Monday to scrap part of a visit to Afghanistan intended to hail improved security after a soldier went missing and was later found dead.

The soldier’s mysterious death in Helmand province, for which the Taliban claimed responsibility, overshadowed Cameron’s announcement that security had improved enough for Britain to soon withdraw a small number of troops.

Cameron arrived in Helmand on Monday morning on a surprise visit but quickly decided to abandon a planned trip to the provincial capital Lashkar Gah, one of a handful of towns earmarked for an early handover to Afghan forces.

The Syrian army made sweeping arrests in a crackdown on dissent in the northwest of the country on Sunday, as troops deployed in the hotbed central city of Hama, an activist said.

The move came as some 100 independent figures met in the capital to discuss a “third way” for Syria, which has been rocked by deadly anti-regime protests for three months.

Troops backed by 97 tanks and personnel carriers advanced late Saturday on Kfar Rumma village and made arrests in the district of Jabal al-Zawiyah, said Rami Abdel Rahman of the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

1 Medvedev restores Belarus power supplies

By Dmitry Astakhov, AFP

1 hr 5 mins ago

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev ordered power supplies to be restored to cash-strapped Belarus after it made a late debt payment, the Kremlin said Saturday.

“Since Minsk has fulfilled its financial obligations, the president gave the order to restore electricity supplies to the Belarussian side according to the existing agreements,” said a statement posted on the Kremlin website.

The decision came after deputy prime minister Igor Sechin, in charge of the energy sector, confirmed in a phone call to Medvedev that Minsk had made the payment, the Kremlin said.
