Prime Time

Some premiers, none of note except for American MastersJeff Bridges, part of a marathon with The Doors.

I never got to say goodbye to my father. There’s questions I would’ve asked him. I would’ve asked him how he felt about what his company did, if he was conflicted, if he ever had doubts. Or maybe he was every inch of man we remember from the newsreels. I saw young Americans killed by the very weapons I created to defend them and protect them. And I saw that I had become part of a system that is comfortable with zero-accountability.

Later-

Dave hosts Kevin James, Olivia Munn, and The Low Anthem.  Jon has Tim Pawlenty (yuck), Stephen Bernard-Henri Levy.  Conan hosts Denis Leary, Tim Minchin, and Ice Cube.

Whatever comes our way, whatever battle we have raging inside us, we always have a choice. My friend Harry taught me that. He chose to be the best of himself. It’s the choices that make us who we are, and we can always choose to do what’s right.

and saw the reference to The Good Earth.  I have not seen that particular motion picture, but the book by Pearl S. Buck should be required reading.  You can find it at the library, and there are lots of inexpensive paperback versions.  Ms. Buck could not have anticipated the irony in her seminal story about the evolution of Chinese peasants to the wealthy, or perhaps she actually did and kept it to herself.

In a nutshell, the book is about starting dirt poor, working hard, accumulated wealth, and finally squandering it, covering several generations of a Chinese family.  If one goes just a little further, it is a cautionary tale about what the United States has done, and the irony is that the Chinese nation now seems to be the beneficiary of the accumulated wealth of the previous generations.

I not not recommend often things for folks to read (except for my posts, LOL!), but this book is excellent.  I highly recommend this book, and everyone should read it and consider its meaning closely.

I thank Sister Jennifer Wortsmith for requiring that our class read it.  I went to a Catholic high school, and actually was a member of the last class, as the school closed after the 1973 school year.  I was fortunate to have such excellent teachers.  I remember them all.

Actually, I would have read the book even if it were not required, just if Sr. Jennifer asked me to read it.  I would have done anything for her, because I sort had a crush on her.  Lots of students have crushes on their teachers, but you will see why had one on her in just a minute.  I have not talked with her for decades, but I think that she would be pleased that I like to write as much as I do.

Here she was, as I remember her as a teacher, in 1972.  And yes, she actually was a nun then, a Sister of Mercy.  All of those sisters were extremely nice to this Protestant kid.

Now you know why I had that crush, in addition to my lifelong love of writing.  Perhaps I should attempt to let her know that I am still writing.

    Warmest regards,

    Doc
