Sharif ‘set for Pakistan poll win’

12 May 2013 Last updated at 07:14 GMT

Former Pakistani PM Nawaz Sharif is celebrating with his supporters, amid early signs that his party will be the largest after parliamentary elections.

Media projections based on partial results suggest a big lead for Mr Sharif’s Muslim League, and he has already claimed victory.

The election should lead to the country’s first transition from one elected government to another.

The turnout was huge but the poll was marred by violence.

In Karachi, the Pakistan Taliban said they planted a bomb which killed 11 people and wounded 40 others.

Cecilia Flores-Oebanda has spent her life fighting — as a child for some education, as a teen rebel against a dictator, and for more than 20 years against human traffickers.

Through it all are the constants; persistence and determination.

Oebanda has become the face of the Philippines anti-trafficking movement — a woman who has the ear of the administration and the friendship of many royals and philanthropists around the globe.

But now she is fighting a battle that could truly ruin her. Fraud allegations made by Philippine investigators threaten to destroy her reputation and the anti-trafficking organization she’s run for more than two decades.

As a reflection of shifting economic fortunes, it takes some beating. Christie’s auction house is opening the world’s first estate agency for wealthy Chinese people who don’t merely want to buy the finest vintages by the bottle, they want to own their own vineyards.

Vineyards by Christie’s International Real Estate – the “first global advisory for buyers of vineyard estates” – is opening in Hong Kong, staffed by fine wine experts and property specialists to offer “a discreet consultative service for clients looking to acquire vineyards in the world’s most sought-after wine regions”.

Extremism in Nigeria: Africa’s great unreported bloodletting

The sophisticated weaponry flooding into the country has enabled Boko Haram to step up the ferocity of its attacks

AP  LAGOS  SUNDAY 12 MAY 2013

At first, the Islamic extremists in Nigeria’s dusty north-east rode on the backs of motorcycles, firing on government officials and other perceived enemies with worn Kalashnikovs hidden beneath their flowing robes. Now, they come prepared for war.

When Islamic fighters drove into a town in north-eastern Nigeria last week, they used anti-aircraft guns, mounted on the backs of trucks, to destroy nearly every landmark of the nation’s federal government. Fighters also rode in on at least one bus, the military said, while in other assaults insurgents have fired rocket-propelled grenades.

Red Bull runs into criticism over extreme sports

Criticism is mounting against the Austrian-based energy drink manufacturer, Red Bull, for its use of extreme sports video clips in advertising, as the death toll rises among those who carry out the stunts.

“Horsepower in the thousands, spectacular shows and the meeting point of top-notch sports greats”: Advertising for “Kini full-throttle days” in Austria on May 1 this year was full of superlatives. But the sporting event turned from spectacle to disaster when the 38-year-old pilot and stuntman Guido Gehrmann crashed his small jet and died.
