It was at this point in 1986 that my Metropolitans delivered the blow that should have made it impossible to wear my Cap outside of Fairfield County (which is about 50% Red Sox anyway). After Bill Buckner’s error gave them Game 6 of a Series that was no better at that point than this one (Mets behind 3 – 2 and facing elimination), evening the Series at 3 sucked out every jot of spirit and momentum from the Sox and when they took the field in the decider they were already beaten.
So, miracles happen. This year? Probably not.
Whatever you want to call the Cubs Game 5 victory, it wasn’t a decisive thumping. More like a nailbiting war of attrition that Chapman, who I can’t believe got dumped from the Yankees (morons), won. If you look ahead to Game 7 there stands Kluber who is a problem they just have not been able to solve so far though you got to believe going to him as often as the Indians do is going to grind him down at some point.
Tonight Arrieta faces Tomlin and it’s a matchup that the Regular Season record indicates is hardly one at all, 18 – 8, 3.10 vs. 13 – 9 4.40. His last start was a No Hit until the 6th and ended in the Cubs Game 2 5 – 1 Win. His ERA in that start was 1.59 and he surrendered 2 Hits and the 1 Run. Tomlin on the other hand tossed a Shutout in Game 3 which the Indians went on to Win 1 – 0. He has an ERA of 0.00 in 4 and 2/3rds Innings.
He is their other, unheralded Ace, and the Cubs best hope is that he’s slightly short on rest. He last pitched October 29th, Arrieta October 27th.
Could the Cubs win? Yes and I hope they do. A more likely outcome is that this is the very last game of 2016.
