Obama authorizes renewed airstrikes in Iraq

President Barack Obama authorized U.S. airstrikes in northern Iraq Thursday night, warning they would be launched if needed to defend Americans from advancing Islamic militants and protect civilians under siege. His announcement threated a renewal of U.S. military involvement in the country’s long sectarian war.

In a televised late-night statement from the White House, Obama said American military planes already had carried out airdrops of humanitarian aid to tens of thousands of Iraqi religious minorities surrounded by militants and desperately in need of food and water.

“Today America is coming to help,” he declared.

Snowden Given Three-Year Residence Permit in Russia

NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden has received a three-year residency permit from the Russian government, a lawyer representing him in Moscow announced Thursday.

“The decision on the application has been taken and therefore starting Aug. 1 2014 Edward Snowden has received a three-year residential permit,” Anatoly Kucherena told reporters.

Driven by Ocean Heat, World Sets Mark for Hottest June

The world just experienced its hottest June on record. The heat was driven in large by part by the hottest ocean temperatures since recordkeeping began more than 130 years ago. That makes this the third-warmest start to the year.

The global temperature was 1.3°F above the 20th century average in June according to data released on Monday by the National Climatic Data Center (NCDC). That bests the previous hottest June record, set in 1998, by 0.05°F.

What to Expect From Hawaii’s First Hurricane Landfall in 22 Years

Hawaii is less than a day away from its first direct strike by a tropical system since Category 4 Hurricane Iniki made landfall on Kauai in 1992. And this time around, there could be a second hit just days later.

As of Thursday morning, Hawaii time, Hurricane Iselle was still on track to make an unprecedented landfall on the southern half of the Big Island, with a Hurricane Warning now in effect for the Big Island. Due in part to its symmetry, at least one model predicts it will keep its hurricane status until landfall-in line with official forecasts. The last tropical system to impact the Big Island was a low-end tropical storm in 1958, which fizzled over the northern half, near Hilo. On its current path, Iselle will be the first hurricane to make landfall on the Big Island in recorded history. On its heels is Hurricane Julio, expected to make a close approach on Monday.

Twin Tropical Systems to Douse Hawaii This Week

Typically tranquil Hawaii is in for an outsized share of weather chaos later this week as two tropical systems seem poised for close approaches.

The first, Hurricane Iselle, is currently as powerful as the strongest storm ever to make landfall in Hawaii: 1992’s Iniki, which hit Kauai hard.
