2011 NCAA Basketball Tournament Men’s Semi Finals

Sunday was a great day for upsets.  As a matter of fact not a single #1 seed is left in it and the highest seed is Connecticut at a 3.  Of course your Cinderella story is Virginia Commonwealth which played it’s way in and has won 4 games since then.

Sunday’s Results

Seed Team Record Score Seed Team Record Score Region
1 Kansas 37 – 3 61 11 *Virginia Commonwealth 28 – 11 71 Southwest
2 North Carolina 30 – 8 69 4 *Kentucky 35 – 8 76 East

Tonight we’ll see all 4 men’s teams.  I’ll of course be rooting for the representative from The Big East, the one with the deeply stupid fight song-

UConn Huskies

UConn Husky, symbol of might to the foe.

Fight, fight Connecticut, It’s vict’ry, Let’s go. (go. go. go)

Connecticut UConn Husky,

Do it again for the White and Blue

So go--go--go Connecticut, Connecticut U.

C-O-N-N-E-C-T-I-C-U-T

Connecticut, Conneticut Husky, Connecticut Husky

Connecticut C-O-N-N-U!

We’ll start out with the matchup of the underdogs, Butler and Virginia Commonwealth.  Though Commonwealth out Cinderella’s Butler this year, Butler is no favorite and was last year’s shocker going down in the finals to Duke by a mere 2 points.

As for Connecticut it’s never a shock when a 4 takes out a 3 but I think they match up well against Kentucky and despite what the idiot commentators say The Big East is the deepest, toughest conference in College Basketball and has been for years.

Regional Finals Day 2

NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament 2011

Tennessee is out which is the only program that compares, but Geno has a light bench they say though I don’t recall hearing about any exceptionally sucky recruiting years recently.

Conventional Wisdom also contends that they match up well against Duke and I still think that a primary motivating factor is that the men are still in it when everbody knows it’s the Lady Huskys who are the Basketball power of Connecticut.

Sorry Gonzaga.  I was rooting for you.  Notre Dame is probably the second best team in The Big East.

DePaul would have been just another Big East meeting.  It’s so much more fun to crush an opponent from the ACC.

Texas A&M has lost to Baylor 3 times so far this year-

  • 63 – 60
  • 67 – 58
  • 61 – 58 (Big 12 Finals)

On the other hand Baylor is just a two hour drive away.

Not a good day for underdogs.

But I am hopeful for tonight.

Gonzaga is going to have to pull off a miracle to get past Stanford, but I sure wouldn’t mind if that happened.

Notre Dame is a better bet.  A number 2 over a number 1 is not that big an upset and Notre Dame is a good team, probably the second best in The Big East.

Besides, don’t you think Pat Summit looks tired?

Round of 16 Day 2

NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament 2011

Yesterday was a good day to be seeded.  The only underdog to advance was Gonzaga which will no doubt make mishima happy.

Today we start off with the Lady Huskies whom I think will be unwilling to exit the Tournament before the Men do.

You see, they’re just a far superior program.

They play Georgetown and all The Big East Teams are tough, but they’ve beat them twice already this year and there’s no reason to expect any different.

Another good good night for the underdogs, 2 out of 4 including Virginia Commonwealth over Florida State (take that Armando).  Don’t complain to me about how they busted your brackets, I root, I don’t pool.

I’m not going to bother with Network anymore since all the remaining games are on CBS (I’m pretty sure, one is unlabeled).  I suppose it’s unnecessary to mention I’ll be rooting for UConn since they’re the only team from The Big East left in it.

Round of 16 Day 1

NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament 2011

Tuesday (was it just Tuesday?) was a good night for underdogs.  For once it’s easier to list the favorites who advanced- Connecticut, Texas A&M, and Baylor.  That’s it.

I don’t know why they’ve scheduled Tip Off for Stanford/North Carolina at 11:30 pm, but I suspect that if I’m even awake I’ll be concentrating more on Formula One.

Round of 16 Part 2

A good night for the underdogs, 3 out of 4.  Don’t complain to me about how they busted your brackets, I root, I don’t pool.

I plan on keeping the Men’s and Women’s tournaments separate and if I’m up to it there is Formula One Qualifying in Australia at 2 am (repeated midnight on Sunday with the race itself to follow at 2 am).

Armando is convinced that there is no way Virginia Commonwealth can stand up against Florida State, but it’s just a 10 seed against an 11 and I don’t see any reason they shouldn’t stay lucky.

Did I mention I’m rooting for Richmond?

As the top Google Blogger reports, the lyrics are “deeply stupid” and it’s hard to admit that as a member of the Marching Band I was required to memorize them and sing them a cappella at each home game.

Of course I was heavily medicated at the time.

Round of 32 Day 2

NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament 2011

Not a good night for underdogs, only North Carolina and Gonzaga beat the seeds.  Advancing underdogs playing tonight are Purdue and West Virginia.

Connecticut gets their own channel, ESPN, for their 7:00 pm game, everyone else shares time on ESPN2.  I like the Lady Huskies, don’t get me wrong, but it does seem kind of unfair especially since if they play to form the game is going to be a snooze fest anyway.

Now tomorrow night will be my first one without basketball in 8 days, but instead of being sensible and taking a nap I have some out of town errands if the weather holds.  Men’s Round of 16 starts Thursday, Round of 8 (Regional Championships) Saturday.  The Women’s Round of 16 starts Saturday and their Regional Championships (Round of 8) on Monday.  Men’s Final 4 on Saturday the 2nd, Championship Monday.  Women’s Final 4 on Sunday, Championship Tuesday.

And then it’s done until next year.
