NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament 2011

Well you can hardly be more wrong than I was on Sunday.  Never let it be said I’m unwilling to admit it when I am.

Sunday’s Results

Now TheMomCat has expressed a preference for the Aggies while I am sticking with my Big East obsession.

This is the 24th and final entry in this year’s coverage, though I do have some meta points to make after I recover from the ordeal.

All too easy.

Notre Dame is just another Big East meeting, but they are the second best team in the Big East and it’s never an upset when a 2 seed beats a 1 seed.

What it looks like (and all the vapid emptyheaded announcers want, watch the bias or better yet turn off the sound) is that we’re going to have a Stanford/UConn rematch in the final.

Sadly I must agree since a large part of the Aggies’ motivation over Baylor was revenge, but you never know and that’s why you play the games.  Aggies would certainly be an easier matchup.

Regional Finals Day 2

NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament 2011

Tennessee is out which is the only program that compares, but Geno has a light bench they say though I don’t recall hearing about any exceptionally sucky recruiting years recently.

Conventional Wisdom also contends that they match up well against Duke and I still think that a primary motivating factor is that the men are still in it when everbody knows it’s the Lady Huskys who are the Basketball power of Connecticut.

Sorry Gonzaga.  I was rooting for you.  Notre Dame is probably the second best team in The Big East.

DePaul would have been just another Big East meeting.  It’s so much more fun to crush an opponent from the ACC.

Texas A&M has lost to Baylor 3 times so far this year-

  • 63 – 60
  • 67 – 58
  • 61 – 58 (Big 12 Finals)

On the other hand Baylor is just a two hour drive away.

Not a good day for underdogs.

But I am hopeful for tonight.

Gonzaga is going to have to pull off a miracle to get past Stanford, but I sure wouldn’t mind if that happened.

Notre Dame is a better bet.  A number 2 over a number 1 is not that big an upset and Notre Dame is a good team, probably the second best in The Big East.

Besides, don’t you think Pat Summit looks tired?

Round of 16 Day 2

NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament 2011

Yesterday was a good day to be seeded.  The only underdog to advance was Gonzaga which will no doubt make mishima happy.

Today we start off with the Lady Huskies whom I think will be unwilling to exit the Tournament before the Men do.

You see, they’re just a far superior program.

They play Georgetown and all The Big East Teams are tough, but they’ve beat them twice already this year and there’s no reason to expect any different.

Round of 16 Day 1

NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament 2011

Tuesday (was it just Tuesday?) was a good night for underdogs.  For once it’s easier to list the favorites who advanced- Connecticut, Texas A&M, and Baylor.  That’s it.

I don’t know why they’ve scheduled Tip Off for Stanford/North Carolina at 11:30 pm, but I suspect that if I’m even awake I’ll be concentrating more on Formula One.

Round of 32 Day 2

NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament 2011

Not a good night for underdogs, only North Carolina and Gonzaga beat the seeds.  Advancing underdogs playing tonight are Purdue and West Virginia.

Connecticut gets their own channel, ESPN, for their 7:00 pm game, everyone else shares time on ESPN2.  I like the Lady Huskies, don’t get me wrong, but it does seem kind of unfair especially since if they play to form the game is going to be a snooze fest anyway.

Now tomorrow night will be my first one without basketball in 8 days, but instead of being sensible and taking a nap I have some out of town errands if the weather holds.  Men’s Round of 16 starts Thursday, Round of 8 (Regional Championships) Saturday.  The Women’s Round of 16 starts Saturday and their Regional Championships (Round of 8) on Monday.  Men’s Final 4 on Saturday the 2nd, Championship Monday.  Women’s Final 4 on Sunday, Championship Tuesday.

And then it’s done until next year.

Round of 32 Day 1

NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament 2011

Well tonight we get to focus our undivided attention on the women and high time too.  The ‘Sweet’ Sixteen on the men’s side is not so much about who you’re rooting for as who you hate less.

But I digress.

Round of 64 Day 2

NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament 2011

Well, I wasn’t entirely happy with yesterday’s Women’s Master Schedule Bracket table so I’m re doing it.  The problem is the column widths get automatically adjusted on you unless you dump all your data into one big list.

Oh, you want Yesterday’s Results not some boring HTML lecture.

Dad (who watched the whole thing, but wasn’t trying to live blog) tells me it was much more exciting than the men’s action and with 4 upsets it was a little more unpredictable than their first day though not I suspect than the first day of The Round of 32 which saw mighty Pittsburg, the pride of The Big East, fall along with some other sentmental favorites.

What will the future bring?  I’m glad you asked.

As it turns out The Round of 32 on the lady’s side is being played Monday and Tuesday while the men are resting (isn’t that just like them) so there will be none of that for the wicked (meaning me).

If you like a more traditional bracket try this NCAA one, they also have a TV schedule.

Lady Huskies Tip Off at noon against the Hartford Hawks.  I’ve seen some Hawk games courtesy of a friend who’s tight with the program and has season tickets.  It’s too bad they didn’t get an easier draw because they’re actually a much better team than they will seem today.

NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament 2011

Round of 64

The reason I like the ladies better than the men is the same reason I like the men better than the pros.  I like fundamentals, ball handling, and zone defense.  Dunks are showboating and should be outlawed.

The ladies get the old school treatment, there’s a package of 4 games in each time period and the studio will switch between them for you.  This is actually a relief for your remote finger because you’ll not miss any pivotal plays and changes in momentum just because you’re stuck watching a blow out with no idea what’s happening elsewhere.  Games are available on ESPN2 and ESPN3.com today with ESPN itself added tomorrow.

The research for this is just as complete as for the men’s Master Schedule Bracket, it’s just arranged slightly differently because there’s not the same bewildering array of Networks and Tip Off times.  Because of the more viewer friendly format I’ll not attempt the real time tracking I have with the men (which is a drag and a drain anyway).

My Women’s Master Schedule Bracket is below the fold, good through Sunday.  Tomorrow I’ll report today’s results.  If you like a more traditional bracket try this NCAA one, they also have a TV schedule.

I’ll be very surprised if the Lady Huskies don’t win it all, but they did lose to Stamford so anything is possible.
