2012 NCAA Women’s Basketball Championship: Regional Finals Day 1

No Mercy.  Geno doesn’t have any and neither do I.  Tonight’s Regional Finals are on ESPN.

We’re gonna show dear old Baylor spirit through and through

We’re gonna fight them with all our might you Bruins bold

B-A-Y-L-O-R, Baylor Bears Fight.

It would be nice if Stanford also went down though Duke is no pushover.  And what did I tell you?  You have to watch out for the Fighting Irish.

Also this year’s seeders did an excellent job.  No upsets either.

Women’s College Hoopies is one area where I am intensely partisan- Lady Huskies all the way.  Therefore I’ll be rooting against Stanford in the nightcap simply because they’re a threat (also they don’t post their overall record which is a pain in the ass).

Likewise I’m a Big Easter and the latest defections, despite being teams I would ordinarily favor, have only hardened my antipathy toward the ACC and it would be a pleasure to see St. John’s, which has little enough to brag about since the Carnesecca Sweater hey days kick some Duke.

Rah! Rah! Rah! Rah! Rah! U-rah! Saint John’s

Rah! Rah! Rah! Rah! Rah! U-rah! Saint John’s

Fight, you Johnnies! Fight you Johnnies!

Stand and fight like men for old Saint John’s.

Fight, you Johnnies! Fight you Johnnies!

You are Alma Mater’s own true sons.

Show the world what S J U can do;

The fighting Johnnies spirit will win through.

Make the vict’ry greater for your dear old Alma Mater and the Cardinal and Blue.

2012 NCAA Men’s Basketball Championship: Regional Finals Day 1

Bill Orange is upon the sidelines

With a megaphone and flag in hand.

He leads the crowd to cheer like demons,

All up and down the old grandstand;

And as the ball is moving goal-ward

Each yard that’s gained he’s marking well

It’s worth while to play for Old Bill Orange

For win or lose you’ll always hear him yell:

Chorus:

“Get in the game to win, boys,

Ev’ry blessed mother’s son of you;

Stand firm along the line,boys,

Watch the ball, this time it’s going through.

Last night the sun set orange,

Omen ever sure and true,

Get in the game and win , boys,

Old Syracuse, she calls to you!”

2012 NCAA Women’s Basketball Championship: Regional Semifinals Day 1 Afternoon

Today’s early games are on ESPN.  Due to far eastern Formula One blogging I think I’ll mostly nap.  Make your own fun.

I’m a Ramblin’ Wreck from Georgia Tech, and a hell of an engineer-

A helluva, helluva, helluva, helluva, hell of an engineer.

Like all the jolly good fellows, I drink my whiskey clear.

I’m a Ramblin’ Wreck from Georgia Tech and a hell of an engineer.

Oh! If I had a daughter, sir, I’d dress her in White and Gold,

And put her on the campus to cheer the brave and bold.

But if I had a son, sir, I’ll tell you what he’d do-

He would yell, ‘To hell with Georgia!’ like his daddy used to do.

Oh, I wish I had a barrel of rum and sugar three thousand pounds,

A college bell to put it in and a clapper to stir it round.

I’d drink to all the good fellows who come from far and near.

I’m a ramblin’, gamblin’, hell of an engineer!

2012 NCAA Men’s Basketball Championship: Regional Semifinals Day 2

It’s hard to get enthused about tonight’s games.  Richard has no interest in the tournament now that MSU is out and made a point of telling me it was the worst game they played all season (I wouldn’t know).

This is the Cinderella side of the bracket and any real upsets will come tonight, but I don’t expect any.

2012 NCAA Men’s Basketball Championship: Regional Semifinals Day 1

Saltine Warrior

In the days of old, when knights were bold

Every city had its warrior man.

In the days of new, when fights are few

You will view them from a big grandstand.

In our college town one has great renown

If the game of football he should play.

With his pig-skin ball he is cheered by all,

He’s the Saltine Warrior of today.

Chorus:

The Saltine Warrior is a bold, bad man,

And his weapon is a pigskin ball,

When on the field he takes a good, firm stand,

He’s the hero of large and small.

He will rush toward the goal with might and main

His opponents all fight, but they fight in vain,

Because the Saltine Warrior is a bold, bad man,

And victorious over all.

If you’ve never been to Syracuse you may not know it’s built over a great salt dome.  This song from 1912-13 is kind of midway between Bill Orange from 1899 and Down the Field from 1914 and was originally part of a musical, not a fight song.  Oddly enough there are no YouTubes I could find.

It’s distinctly possible that the Orange could go down tonight because they’re not that good a team and their 7 foot center, Fab Melo, is still under suspension.  Plus they’ve never, ever been able to shoot fouls in the Boeheim era.

Altogether it’s been a tough year, they’ve had a Paterno-esque molestation scandal with the assistant head coach, Boeheim has always hated his job, and they’re pulling out of the Big East because the Administration would rather have a Throwball program that sucks than a Basketball team.

They are my sentimental favorites, but you don’t bet money on sentiment.  Armando, who has been consistently wrong this season, gets to see his beloved ‘Gators go down in flames tonight so don’t expect any charity from him tomorrow.  His predictions are here.

Michigan State should advance with ease (No Troll Izzo), I’m rooting for Cincinnati over the evil Ohio State (I’m only half troll and no part Buckeye).

2012 NCAA Women’s Basketball Championship: Round of 32 Day 1

It is extemely hard to keep up and I’ve made some mistakes (which I blame on my source material, so spare me the sympathy- I’ve got my righteous indignation on).

I expect that later this evening I’ll recap where we’re at, but if I don’t get there until tomorrow that’s when I do (I sound so much more mellow in print than I do screaming at the screen because one of my </td>s got eaten).

UConn, Louisville, Stanford, Tennessee, those are the only Women’s Basketball programs of note and if one of them does not win I’ll be entirely surprised.  Notre Dame is trying to catch up, Pat Summitt is suffering from Alzheimers.

What I like about the Women’s game is that it really is about fundamentals- passing, offense, defense.  The Men’s game is an NBA audition and rewards selfishness and showboating even though there are more genuine stars in terms of sheer athletic ability on the ladies side.

Not trying to prove anything here, but I actually believe Men are genetically damaged and engaged in cultural oppression to mask their inferiority.

Man is without any doubt the most interesting fool there is.

He can seldom take a plain fact and get any but a wrong meaning out of it. He cannot help this; it is the way the confusion he calls his mind is constructed. Consider the things he concedes, and the curious conclusions he draws from them.

(F)rom the time a woman is seven years old till she dies of old age, she is ready for action, and competent. As competent as the candlestick is to receive the candle. Competent every day, competent every night. Also she wants that candle — yearns for it, longs for it, hankers after it, as commanded by the law of God in her heart.

But man is only briefly competent; and only then in the moderate measure applicable to the word in his sex’s case. He is competent from the age of sixteen or seventeen thence-forward for thirty-five years. After fifty his performance is of poor quality, the intervals between are wide, and its satisfactions of no great value to either party; whereas his great-grandmother is as good as new.

(T)here you have a sample of man’s “reasoning powers,” as he calls them. He observes certain facts. For instance, that in all his life he never sees the day that he can satisfy one woman; also, that no woman ever sees the day that she can’t overwork, and defeat, and put out of commission any ten masculine plants that can be put to bed to her. He puts those strikingly suggestive and luminous facts together, and from them draws this astonishing conclusion: The Creator intended the woman to be restricted to one man.

So he concretes that singular conclusion into law, for good and all.

And he does it without consulting the woman, although she has a thousand times more at stake in the matter than he has. His procreative competency is limited to an average of a hundred exercises per year for fifty years, hers is good for three thousand a year for that whole time — and as many years longer as she may live. Thus his life interest in the matter is five thousand refreshments, while hers is a hundred and fifty thousand; yet instead of fairly and honorably leaving the making of the law to the person who has an overwhelming interest at stake in it, this immeasurable hog, who has nothing at stake in it worth considering, makes it himself!
