Tomblaine / La Planche des Belles Filles (123.7 miles)
Le. Tour. De. France.
So Le Tour has 2 dual stage winners, Peter Sagan and Andre Greipel Take that Formula One.
Also plenty of flaming chunks of twisted metal which is why Sprinters can’t be trusted.
On the other hand you can’t say that among the front runners they’ve had much material effect. Of the “name” dark horses Frank Schleck has been hurt the worst, losing 2:02 by getting involved in yesterday’s 26 km crash. Mark Cavendish lost a similar amount, but he’s a Sprinter so his total time doesn’t matter as much.
Alessandro Valverde, Pierre Rolland, Robert Gesink and Janez Brajkovic lost over 2:30 each. Thomas Voeckler and Ryder Hesjedal much more.
Wouter Poels, Thomas Danielson, Davide Vigano, and Mikel Astarloza are already withdrawn, many people are pretty beat up.
The good news is that today we have a nice, safe, sane Mountain stage where the all-rounder GC contenders may be able to put on a move or two. There are two category 3s and a category 1. The Points award is just before the first peak.

Today’s stage start and finish are two new locales for Le Tour, the village of Tomblaine and a ski station on the last summit of the Vosges, La Planche des Belles Filles.
Tomblaine
• Stage town for the first time
• 8,000 inhabitants
• Head of the canton of Meurthe-et-Moselle
A new town on the Tour de France’s map, Tomblaine is situated in the sphere of influence of Nancy, where the peloton has been going since 1905. Fausto Coppi, Louison Bobet and Bernard Hinaul have been winners there, but the memory which is the freshest in our minds is that of Christophe Mengin’s bitter disappointment in the 2005 Tour. The stage’s regional rider had every opportunity to win, by joining the breakaway of the day, and then leaving his fellow riders behind him in the final stretch. The several second’s lead that he still had after the red pennant should have been enough, but he was caught out by the rain and the rider from Lorraine finished his route by crashing into the barriers on the edge of the last bend. Italy’s Lorenzo Bernucci took advantage of his bad luck.
La Planche des Belles Filles
• Stage site for the first time
• The summit of the Vosges massive (1148 m) in Haute-Saône
The only ski resort in the department of Haute-Saône and the last summit of the Vosges, La Planche des Belles Filles (English: Board of the pretty girls) is going to make a promising entrance among the Tour de France’s finish sites. Although the final slope seems to be reserved for the strongest climbers, this place takes its name from a collective and hopeless flight of the women of the valley, who wanted to escape from a massacre declared by the Vikings during their conquest in the 15 th century. The station’s name, according to legend, dates to 1635 when a Swedish soldier engraved an epitaph to some local girls who drowned whilst fleeing him and his men.

and takes the “King of the Mountain” jersey. Froome is a teammate of Bradley Wiggens who followed him over the finish at the top of a very steep climb in 3rd place. Wiggens becomes the leader of LE Tour and will wear the yellow jersey.
… the Yellow Jersey, except for staying out of crashes while the crazy sprinters go crazy ~ and given the distance of the prologue time trial, the first serious day.
Cadel was isolated on the climb, while Team Sky started the climb with four riders, and Wiggins used the four riders to tear the peleton apart and shake out the General Category (GC) standings. Cadel attacked Wiggins in the turn before the steepest (20%) part of the climb, and was grinding on the steepest part, so Froome who was the last of the pacemakers left for Wiggins was able to make a charge up the steepest part of the climb and take a two second gap for the win and the KOM jersey.
On KOM points: the “Prince of the Hills” for the first week was always going to lose the polka dot jersey on this climb. It is the first Category 1 climb, which gives 10 points for the winner, and the Prince of the Hills only had 9 points. Plus, since it was a mountain top finish, the points are doubled, so Froome at one KOM spot picked up 20 points ~ more than were available for the entire first week of the race.
There was also a shake-up in the White Jersey competition. American Tejay on Cadel Evan’s team BMC finished 3’08” back on the day, while Etsania’s Rein Taaramea on Cofidis finished 0’19” back. Rein put more than a minute into each of his Young Rider jersey competitors today. Tejay is still second in the White Jersey race, and may have a chance to take time back on Monday, the long and reasonably bumpy time trial: he has 2’37” to make up.
The KOM race is wide open at this point, because building up KOM points requires going out on a breakway on a stage like tomorrow, and Froome cannot defend his jersey since he must stay in the peleton and work for Bradley Wiggins. Cadel and Wiggins are second and third and they are leading the race, so they don’t have the freedom to go up the road. Morkov in fourth, the Prince of the Hills, is not likely to be able to handle the big climbs, Nibali is 3rd on GC so he won’t have freedom, and those are the only riders with more than four KOM pts in the bank.
Tomorrow has 1 Cat1 (10pts) before a downhill finish and before that has 4 Cat2 climbs (5pts) and a 3rd (2pts) so if someone gets in an early break in good climbing form, he could amass 22pts before the Cat1 at the finish., and have the polka dots through Wednesday, with the time trial and rest day coming up. Of course, with 20pts, Froome can expect to be leading Wiggins up the Cat1 and so will likely pick up some KOM on the Cat1 near the end just as a side effect of team racing.
A not unlikely scenario are several KOM hopefuls go out on the break tomorrow, split the spoils, Froome stays in polka dots but at the same time the real rivals for the KOM emerge.
